Chemist, chemical engineer

Chemical engineers focus on the development and carrying out of industrial processes to extract and process materials. They develop and create plants and processes from the laboratory phase through experiments to industrial production.

Study

Courses at the ETH in Zurich or Lausanne and at the Universities of Basel, Bern, Fribourg, Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchâtel.

Length of course: 8-9 semesters

Chemical engineering is one the subjects offered at the ETH in Zurich and Lausanne and at Geneva University. Biochemistry can be studied to degree level as a specialisation or as a subject in its own right.

Qualification: Students can either obtain a diploma or a degree depending on the educational establishment.

Further training
  • Further training at educational establishments or professional associations
  • Post-graduate studies in universities or universities of applied sciences, e.g. food chemistry, biotechnbology, ecology, intellectual property
  • Doctorate: 3-4 years
  • Diploma for university-level teaching
  • Food chemist: federal diploma examination, employment with cantonal health departments
