EMPA (Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research)

The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA) were originally set up in 1880 as the ETH's Institute of Construction Materials Testing and were initially not greatly involved in research.

Research and development have become increasingly important since the late 1980s, and today EMPA is establishing itself as an international leader among research institutions involved in sustainable materials and material systems technologies (EMPA Vision 2010).

Its core interests are research into and the development of innovative structural and functional engineering materials and the integrated evaluation and development of products, processes and systems for industrial and consumer goods.

EMPA is headquartered in Dübendorf. It has a budget of around CHF 105 million and employs the equivalent of approximately 700 full-time staff.
