PSI (Natural Science and Technology Research Institute)

The Paul Scherrer Institute, a multidisciplinary natural science and technology research institute based in Villigen, was created in 1988 when the Swiss Institute of Nuclear Research was merged with the Swiss Federal Institute of Reactor Research.

It acts as a user lab for the international research community in universities, universities of applied sciences and industry, and offers capabilities in both basic and applied research.

Its core competencies are in physics, materials sciences, life sciences and nuclear and non-nuclear energy research, and it offers major scientific facilities such as the 590 MeV cyclotron, the Swiss spallation neutron source (SINQ), the muon spin rotation (µSR) facility and the Synchrotron Light Source Switzerland (SLS). PSI is a world leader in energy research.

It has the equivalent of approximately 1,260 full-time employees and a budget of around CHF 245 million.
